Philip Sutton RA
1928 Born in Poole, Dorset, Philip Sutton was brought up in the East End of London, where he painted his first landscape of the marshes and Epping Forest. He Left school at fourteen and worked for three years in a drawing office. He did his National Service during the Berlin Airlift
1948-53 Slade School of Art
1953 Travelled to Spain, France and Italy on scholarships. Sold his first paintings to Peter Pears at Roland, Browse and Delbanco and thereafter exhibited paintings in Cork Street for Twenty eight years.
1954 Began teaching at the Slade School of Fine Art, London
1955 Settled in Snape, Suffolk where he painted landscapes.
1956 Elected Member of the London Group
1958 Came back to London, painted nudes, still lifes and views of London.
1969 Retrospective at Leeds City Art Gallery.
1963-64 travelled to Australia and Fiji, returning with a large exhibition of tropical landscapes- his wife made a film “Philip Sutton working in Fiji”.
1966 Editioned prints by Curwen Prints.
1969 Began to spend part of the year for ten years in Cornwall, and painted landscapes, seascapes including a series on Falmouth Docks.
1977 A film was made by the BBC Arena programme about his work. Elected Associate Royal Academician. Retrospective exhibition at Royal Academy.
1979 Invited to tour Israel with a group of artists. Painted on a Kibbutz and in Jerusalem. Designed poster and flag for the Summer Exhibition Royal Academy.
1980 Painted in Australia for four months.
1982 Exhibited six large paintings of the Great Barrier Reef at the Royal Academy.
1983 Visited North Sea oil rigs arranged by Shell. Painted watercolours in Ireland
1984 Tapestry designed by Philip Sutton made by Joan Baxter and Helen Gibbs at West Dean College Tapestry for Shell Oil.
1985 Designed flag for German painting exhibition at the Royal Academy. Made two editions of silk screen prints at Chilford Hall Press with Kip Gresham. Series of paintings in Battersea Park. Designed 3i logo for Investors in Industry.
1986 A second tapestry made at West Dean College Tapestry Workshop, this time by Penny Bush, of a painting by Philip Sutton. Became involved in painting ceramics. Commissioned by Theo Crosby of Pentagram to paint a wall of tiles at the Art Tile Factory, Stoke-on-Trent for the D.N.B. Bank in Amsterdam. Painted a series of tree and beach pictures in Pembrokeshire. Worked at the pottery of Barbara Lenartowicz and made a series of pots and bowls with her. Worked with the resident potter at the Poole Pottery. Worked with the Welsh potter Alan Cummings at his pottery in Pembrokeshire.
1987 Fulham Pottery Project. Worked with French potter Jean-Paul Landreau for seven months at Fulham Pottery, Battersea, ending with Exhibition of ceramics at Odette Gilbert Gallery, Cork Street, London. Commissioned by the Post Office to design new stamps for them. Issued oin 1989. Painted in Manorbier West Wales. Series of water colours in Cahors, France.
1988 Continued Work with printer Ian Mortimer of I.M. Imprint, London on colour woodcuts using Japanese paper. Painted watercolours in New Zealand. First exhibition in Paris. Painted William Shakespeare for the International Shakespeare Globe Centre in London to help promote the new theatre being built. Poster made of William Shakespeare painting. Large poster for London Transport. Charcoal and oil painting at Kew for a show in London to raise money for the gardens.
1989 Painting in Pembrokeshire where he now lives and works. Elected Royal Academician . Six oil paintings on show at Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
1990 New ceramic project with Jean-Paul Landreau in Wales. Painted watercolours in Italy.
1992 Agnews, London. Paintings, ceramics, watercolours and drawings exhibition. The Royal Academy Exhibition, The Joan Hurst Collection.
1995-7 Series of paintings on Shakespeare which continued for the next three years. Exhibition sponsored by Halifax Plc at the Royal Academy of Arts, the International Shakespeare Globe Centre, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-upon-Avon and the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds. Film made about the Shakespeare paintings by HTV. Exhibition at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, Philip Sutton Pembrokeshire.
